With salary, formal education and career information at your disposal, you can make a better decision about whether a career as an actor or actress is right for you. While there is no traditional path to becoming an actor or actress, this article is a great stepping stone if you want to take that first step and aren't sure where to start.
Step 1: Obtain an Education People interested in acting can learn the skills of acting through various educational paths. Some aspiring actors or actresses obtain bachelor's degrees from universities or colleges. Still, traditional education is not necessary for employment, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Gaining education and experience can come from other avenues, such as:
High school drama classes Individual training Acting conservatories Community theatre groups Drama and dialect coaches Short films
Step 2: Consider a Master of Fine Arts Program Some universities offer Master of Fine Arts in Acting programs. These programs offer students the opportunity to participate in intensive acting workshops. Advanced acting courses might include voice and speech, character building and research methods, script analysis, classical (Shakespearean) acting, stage combat and physical conditioning. Those considering graduate studies in acting might look for programs accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre.
Step 3: Audition and Land Roles Actors and actresses need to find auditions to find work. They use auditions to show what they are capable of, and casting agents or directors use these auditions to determine if an actor is right for a part. Auditions can be obtained through audition banners around you or through agents and through industry publications such as Backstage (www.backstage.com) worldwide
Step 4: Obtain Union Membership Actors or actresses are usually recognized as professionals once they obtain union membership. Professional unions, such as the Actors guide of Nigeria(AGN), American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) for television and radio actors and the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) for film actors, provide benefits and opportunities (www.sag.org). Union membership helps protect actors and actresses during strikes, offers a minimum pay standard for working, as well as traditional health and pension options. Performers must pay regular fees and meet minimum working requirements in order to maintain active status within unions.
Step 5: Find Employment Acting jobs were predicted to grow ten percent from 2014-2024, which was slower than the average for other occupations, according to the BLS. This was due to heavy competition in the field. Actors or actresses may want to seek roles in television and film, rather than theater, since performing arts jobs were expected to see very slow job growth. The BLS reported that actors earned an average wage of $37.47 per hour as of May 2015, although there was a wide variance in wages. The bottom 10 percent of actors earned $9.27 per hour or less, while the top 10 percent of these professionals made $90 or more per hour.
The first step to becoming an actor is training, which can be obtained in a number of ways, such as classes and workshops, coaching or college degree programs. Actors usually must join professional unions to be considered for roles, which they obtain through auditions. This a competitive field, with slow job growth projections, and salaries vary greatly, depending on the type of work.
